TextMate

Although it is not visible on the surface, Windows and Mac OS X have specific advantages and disadvantages when it comes to editing text. TextMate is designed to combine the advantages of both platforms and the drawbacks of none. It is a lightweight text editor, with support for UNIX underpinnings and a clean graphical user interface. It looks and feels like a plain text editor, but its rich functionality may satisfy you more than some language-specific IDEs.

There is not much to see on the main user interface, apart from a few selection menus on its lower edge. While typing your code, you can choose between various formats, from plain text to one of many programming languages. The application can make your work more comfortable, with its language-specific syntax highlighting capabilities, auto-indenting, word completion and other useful features.

You can find many more features in a series of menus, on the top edge of the screen. Foldable code blocks, CSS-like selectors, which can help you pinpoint the scope of actions and settings, column selection and typing and the possibility of recording macros are just a few examples. A particular advantage worth mentioning is that you can edit snippets, organize them by language and insert them into your project on the fly. Besides looking through menus for snippets, you can also set up keyboard triggers for your snippets.
